NEXT HOME GAME
LIGA PHILIPS PREFERENTE GRUPO UNICO - game 23
Sunday 19/02/2017 kickoff 5pm (17:00)
To be played at the ESTADIO MUNICIPAL DE MAZARRON
MAZARRON F.C. v F.C. CARTAGENA
Next weekend two teams currently in fine form face each other but with Mazarrón FC having the home advantage and that could make all the difference, I hope.
Mazarrón FC comes to the game following an excellent 0-4 away win at CD El Esparragal, not an easy place to go to and come away with all the points, so the 'boys did good' against a dangerous foe.
Meanwhile FC Cartagena were at home to relegation threatened Montecasillas, 3rd from bottom, and stuck 5 goals passed them to, one, cement Cartagena's 3rd place and sees them challenging for an automatic place and, two, push Montecasillas further into the brown smelly stuff. Although for the game Montecasillas could only provide one substitute and finished up with only 9 players left on the pitch following two sendings off. FC Cartagena had a red card also shown in the game but to a member of their coaching staff.
WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST TIME THE TWO SIDES MET?
FC CARTAGENA 1 - MAZARRON FC 1 (01.10.2016)
Mazarron produced an excellent team performance to earn a draw away to third placed FC Cartagena and continue their improved form.
Mazarron started brightly, forcing two early corners, from one of which Koko's shot was well saved by the Cartagena keeper.
Mazarron's early dominance paid off in the 21st minute when Javi Torrano picked up the ball outside the penalty area and beat two Cartagena defenders before placing a right foot shot firmly into the corner of the net. Mazarron continued to press forward with their midfield closing down quickly and giving Cartagena no time on the ball.
Mazarron suffered a blow when the impressive Javi Torrano had to be substituted after 35 minutes following a bad tackle from behind which the referee failed to penalise.
If the first half was all Mazarron, the second belonged to Cartagena although Mazarron still had their moments. Chino was brought down on the edge of the penalty area after a typical surging run but the referee, inexplicably, waved play on. At the other end, Jose Miguel headed over the bar for Cartagena and Alejandro's shot was too high.
Boudia burst forward for Mazarron but failed to get his shot on target before Cartagena equalised on 65 minutes when Adama turned home a right wing corner.
Five minutes later young goalkeeper Pablo kept Mazarron in the game with an excellent point-blank save. Mazarron's best effort of the second half came on 75 minutes when Cesar found space on the right and saw his fierce shot tipped round the post by the Cartagena keeper only for the referee to signal for a goal kick.
Pablo made another crucial save ten minutes from time as Mazarron gained a valuable point helped by an excellent defence superbly marshalled at the back by captain Juan 'Sam' Andreo and his central defensive partner Raso.
CURRENT STATS
3rd FC CARTAGENA P 22 W 11 D 8 L 3 GF 57 GA 26 Points 41
6th MAZARRÓN FC P 21 W 10 D 5 L 6 GF 31 GA 19 Points 35
*Mazarrón FC have a game in hand *
WHO TO WATCH OUT FOR?
As you can see from the stats. FC Cartagena are rattling in the goals this season whilst being quite tight at the back. They have in Renato Da Silva Ferreira playing at number 11 and Ivan Perez Torres, who wears the number 7 shirt, a twin strike force who have scored 8 goals each so far this season but FC Cartagena also have a further two players on 7 a piece and another two with 6 each, so goals can come from anywhere in this team. FC Cartagena have the financial and sporting facilities clout of their parent club and it shows.
Compare this to Mazarrón FC who's top scorer is Raul with 5. Thank goodness for 'Sam' and the boys at the back who have only conceded a miserly 19 all season. Time for the Mazarrón front line to get their shooting boots on.
SANCTIONS AND SUSPENSIONS

MAZARRON FC 1 FC CARTAGENA 1
A last minute equaliser from Cartagena denied Mazarron the three points but they still continued their unbeaten run to seven games.
There were a number of opportunities for both sides in the early stages with Jimmy going close for Mazarron following a free kick but his shot was saved by the visiting keeper. Play was end to end with both sides evenly matched and a Cartagena free kick was blocked by the five man Mazarron wall. Then Jimmy hit another shot wide of the target as Mazarron began to have the better of the play. They were rewarded after 29 minutes when good work by Jimmy forced a corner from which Raul turned the ball home to give the home team a deserved lead.
The goal forced Cartagena onto the attack and Mazarron had to defend resolutely to preserve their lead. Despite this pressure Mazarron again went close when Jimmy’s shot hit the side netting and Mazarron went into the interval with a slender one goal advantage.
Both sides struggled to make any impression in the early stages of the second half although Mazarron had an escape when a fierce Cartagena effort struck the post. At the other end a volley from Boudia was just wide of the target and play was interrupted on a number of occasions when both teams made numerous substitutions.
A Cartagena free kick was wide of the target and Raul then missed a good chance for Mazarron when well placed. As the game entered the last ten minutes Cartagena continued to press forward in search of an equaliser and they were rewarded with virtually the last kick of the game when Juan Fran made the final score 1-1.
The result saw Mazarron drop down a place to seventh but only one point separates them from the fourth placed team and they have a game in hand over the three teams immediately above them.
Team: Juan Pedro; Chino; Marcos; Raso; Juan Andreo; Boudia (Javi Torrano); Raul; Cesar (Steven); Miguel; Dani (Andreo); Jimmy.
Man of the Match: Raul.
