Well we are off to Lorca to take on top team CF Lorca Deportiva next weekend and they have played in a couple of locations this season but fortunately the grounds where they have played at are close to one another.
They have played in the impressive main Lorca Estadio Francisco Artes Carrasco stadium, which is the main Lorca stadium where we played and beat them in last season.
At the end of this email I will give directions to the ground for those of you who are travelling independently.
Lorca, in it's many guises, have come and gone many, many times over the years and from once being a potential powerhouse of Spanish football they have now been relegated to the 'second' team of the city of Lorca with La Hoya now being the top dogs in the city.
To illustrate how far Lorca have fallen in the city of Lorca in footballing term, La Hoya's second team, La Hoya 'B' are in the same league as CF Lorca Deportiva!
A BRIEF HISTORY
Club de Fútbol Lorca Deportiva are based in Lorca and were founded in 1969 and dissolved in 1994 due to serious economic debts, it held home games at Estadio Municipal de San San José, now called the Estadio Francisco Artes Carrasco, which has a capacity of over 8000 seats built with a view to getting into La Liga.
CF Lorca played in Segunda division in the 1984-85 season finishing 20th and last in its only season in the category.
Following the side's disappearance another club was founded in the city, Lorca Club de Fútbol, through a merger between UD Lorca and Lorca Promesas. It also folded, in 2002.
Financial problems have followed this club in it's various revivals since, for example I can remember playing CF Lorca in Lorca in the season that we were relegated from the Tercera division, 2009-10, it was a mid week evening game.
Lorca were in such financial straights that we were all asked to buy raffle tickets for a Lorca shirt as well as paying to go in in order cash could be raised to give the players a bit of cash to live on.
At the start of the game there was an amazing site of the whole of the Lorca side dropping to their knees with the players putting their arms behind their back in protest of not being paid for months. Mazarron FC sportingly kicked the ball between themselves and did not take advantage before Lorca got to their feet and proceeded to thrash us 5-0.
The current team is yet another reincarnation of that team. We next came across them last season in our current league when they finish a very respectable 8th but they are flying this season.
Mazarron once again were beaten by the only goal of the game, this time a hotly disputed penalty.
It was 25 minutes before Mazarron managed their first shot at goal when Alcaraz’s pin point pass found Chema racing clear only to see his shot turned wide by the Lorca keeper. Four minutes later, with Mazarron now beginning to dominate the game, a cracking left foot drive from Alfonso was just wide of the target.
Shortly afterwards Cecilio tried an overhead kick that Chema just failed to convert at the far post. It was all Mazarron at this stage.
Salvi, was then shown a red card whist still sat on the substitution bench and just two minutes later the Lorca right back was sent off when he was shown his second yellow card following tackles on Jose Ruben.
Then the crazy, crazy penalty was awarded to Lorca. Following a free kick, which was punched clear by Ruben, the referee astonishingly awarded a penalty with no offence spotted by the home supporters, the penalty was converted. Was it awarded to level up the red card?
Thereafter the Lorca defence managed to withstand everything that Mazarron threw at it.
OTHER DETAILS
If we play in the main stadium or the alternative the playing surface is grass with both facilities having seating, decent toilets and a canteen.
Lorca play in BLUE and WHITE so we should be in RED for the game.
CURRENT STATS:
1st CF LORCA DEPORTIVA P 22 W 14 D 5 L 3 GF 42 GA 14 Points 47
12th MAZARRON FC P 22 W 9 D 2 L 11 GF 47 GA 42 Points 29
So you can see that although Lorca have scored fewer goals that Mazarron FC their rock solid defence have only conceded 14 goals compered to our 42 and that's the main difference between the sides, the ability to prevent the opposition scoring.
Last weekend they were away at El Esparragal where they won 1-2 with a report that they were down to 9 players by the end of the game.
DIRECTIONS TO THE GROUND
Again for this weekends game it couldn´t be more simple to get there and it's close by only 48km and about 35 minutes away.
For those of you with sat nav´s the co-ordinates for the ground are 37° 38' 19" N, 01° 44' 00" W
For others, leave the Country club/Camposol and join the dual carriageway in the direction of Totana. On reaching the A7 motorway take the exit towards Lorca/Granada. Stay on the A7 motorway until you go through the tunnel underneath Lorca castle and the turn off that you want is the second exit after the tunnel, it is numbered 587 on google maps and gives directions to "Hospital R. Mendez" but be careful as the numbers on the A7 have recently been changed so rely on the "Hospital R. Mendez" sign.
At the bottom of the slipway as you leave the motorway take a LEFT at the junction following signs for the hospital. As you get to the brow of the hill you will see the main stadium on your right with a huge free car park.
