After trying to explain the promotion play-off system for the Tercera, I thought I'd have a go at the other leagues!
La Liga is easy....the bottom three teams get relegated to the Segunda.
Segunda Division...not too bad, the top two teams get promoted with the next four in two rounds of play-offs for ONE further promotion. The bottom four teams are relegated to Segunda 'B'.
Now it gets interesting as Segunda 'B' is split into four regional groups.
The four champions play a single tie over two legs. The two winners getting promotion to the Segunda. Positions 2 to 4 (12 teams) are drawn into six ties (two legs) with the winners progressing to a further elimination and being joined by the two losers from the champions ties (now 8 teams). The teams play a further two rounds of ties to reduce them to the additional two teams to be promoted to the Segunda.
The bottom four teams of each Segunda 'B' group are relegated to the Tercera. The four fifth-bottom teams play a single tie (two legs) with the losers also being relegated to the Tercera (a total of 18 relegations).
The Tercera division is also organised into regional groups - eighteen of them (Mazarrón is in Group 13).
The eighteen champions play a single tie over two legs. The nine winners are promoted to Segunda 'B'. Positions 2 to 4 (54 teams) are drawn into 27 ties (two legs) with the winners progressing to a further elimination and being joined by the nine losers from the champions ties (now 36 teams). The teams play a further two rounds of ties to reduce them to the additional nine teams to be promoted to Segunda 'B'.
After all the games have been completed, the men in Madrid then sit round a table and try to balance the four Segunda 'B' groups to each have 20 teams - as far as possible keeping teams from the same Tercera area in the same Segunda 'B' group.
Promotions from Tercera to Segunda 'B' result in additional promotions up from the next level (Preferente in Murcia). When teams are relegated from Segunda 'B' to Tercera, the Tercera number is increased for one season with the number of relegations then increasing to return to a nominal 20 teams.
