Valencia football manager sacked after 25-0 victory
The youth team on the wrong end of the scoreline suffered humiliation as well as defeat
It can be a hard job managing a football team: when the side wins, the players take all the glory, and when results go against them it is the trainer whose job is on the line first.
However, it can be safely assumed that few bosses have ever been shown the door after a 25-0 victory, although this is the case of the man who was dismissed from his post as the manager of the “alevín” under-12s football team of CD Serranos in Valencia.
His team thrashed their opponents from Benicalap by that scoreline, but the club’s management apparently did not enjoy seeing the visiting youngsters humiliated in this way and asked the trainer to step down.
Many amateur sports can throw up situations such as this, and it certainly can be hard for young children to accept such drastic inferiority, hence the generally accepted sportsmanship which involves the winners taking their foot off the pedal or sometimes even “lending” players to the other side in order to enjoy a good contest. But on this occasion no mercy was shown and the trainer paid the price, although his lawyer maintains that the players simply couldn’t stop scoring despite being instructed to hold back.
There have been attempts in minor leagues to limit the highest acceptable score, but apparently this sits ill with some ambitious parents, who complain that their offspring scored more goals than those reflected in the official report.
The youth teams of Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad have decided not to publish the names of those who score in matches of this age group, at least after the back of the net is found for the tenth time, and similar steps have been taken at the youth levels of Real Betis, where after the score reaches ten players are instructed to score but not to celebrate.
Fortunately the first team is not often placed in this predicament…
