FINAL GAME OF THE REGULAR SEASON
LIGA PHILIPS PREFERENTE GRUPO UNICO - game 34
Scheduled for Sunday 14/05/2017
To be played at the CIUDAD DEPORTIVA GOMEZ MESEGUER
CARTAGENA F.C. v MAZARRON F.C.
So for our final game of the regular season Mazarrón FC travel to Cartagena FC in knowledge that they are assured of a playoff place and the result of this game will decide wether they face Las Garres at home or away in the first of the two legs in the playoff competition for promotion.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEKEND?
Mazarrón FC were at home to Plus Ultra and the end result of that final home fixture was a a very workman like performance ending in a 3-0 victory for Mazarrón and in doing so confirmed their playoff place.
Meanwhile our opponents were on their travels to the already relegated Montecasillas and in that encounter, with the home side only able to field one substituted, Cartagena came away with a 1-4 away win.
ABOUT OUR OPPONENTS
Cartagena FC finished a credible 10th in the Preferente last season and currently sit in a similar place this year and have no worries either about promotion or relegation. Cartagena FC play in the familiar black and white striped shirt and black short so Mazarrón FC should be in their regular red strip.
Cartagena FC play in the GÓMEZ MESEGUER" stadium which is situated next to the Centro comercial Espacio Mediterraneo in Cartagena. Directions from Camposol are to take the dual carriageway and travel north on the RM3. Upon reaching the large traffic island at its junction with the RM2 take the dual carriageway towards Torre Pacheco. At the end of this road take the A30 towards Cartagena and stay on the motorway until you reach the turn off for the Centro comercial Espacio Mediterraneo. As you leave the motorway turn right on the traffic island and the ground is 200 metres on your right. At this sporting complex there are both grass and artificial pitches of a high quality and in the past we have played on both.
At the ground there is good seating to observe the game, and an excellent canteen with toilet facilities. There are vast amounts of free parking outside the stadium and with the huge shopping centre nearby there is lots to do prior to kickoff.
The distance from Camposol to the stadium is 55KM but should only take roughly 35-45 minutes due to the excellent motorway system. There are obviously alternative routes across country and if you have a sat nav the coordinates to the ground are 37° 37' 13" N, 00° 57' 02" W
Details of the Los Amigos supporters away coach will be published on the forum and on Los Amigos Facebook site when they are available.
WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST TIME WE PLAYED?
The first game of 2017 saw Cartagena FC visit Mazarrón and it was the boys in red who collected all three points with a late, late winner and here is a résumé of what occurred during that encounter.
MAZARRON FC 3 - CARTAGENA FC UCAM 2 (8.1.2017)
Mazarron scored a 92nd minute goal to gain an important victory against fourth placed Cartagena FC UCAM in an entertaining game at the Estadio Municipal.
After a quiet start the game burst to life in the 13th minute. Chino hit a superb free kick which was well saved by the visiting keeper but Raul was on hand to stab the rebound home. Two minutes later Juan Pedro was forced into action with a good save diving to his left to keep Cartagena at bay and Mazarron then again went close with an overhead kick from Boudia which went just wide of the far post.
Cartagena equalised after 20 minutes when a crossfield ball was well controlled by full back Jesus who hit a fierce shot past Juan Pedro into the roof of the net. Mazarron had a goal disallowed on 28 minutes when Jimmy's cross was forced over the line by Ruben only to be denied by the linesman's flag.
However, Cartagena took the lead two minutes later when a free kick from the half way line was headed down to central defender Pablo who made no mistake from six yards. The visitors were now having the better of the game but Mazarron delighted their supporters with an equaliser six minutes before half time. Chino's free kick was headed on to Jimmy on the left and his cross was superbly headed into the top corner by new signing Dani Morallis.
Mazarron began the second half brightly with a spectacular overhead kick by Jimmy saved by the Cartagena keeper. They forced two corners in quick succession and should after taken the lead on 63 minutes. A superb through ball by substitute Domingo found Ruben running clear of the Cartagena defence but he placed his shot disappointingly wide of the far post.
Ruben then had another half chance but his shot was deflected off his own player to safety before Juan Pedro, not for the first time this season, kept Mazarron in the game with a superb save. Severiano's fierce shot was heading for the top corner when the Mazarron keeper leapt high to turn the ball over the bar for a corner.
While the Mazarron supporters were happy to settle for a point against their high flying visitors, substitute Steven had other ideas. In the second minute of added time, he chased a hopeful long ball some 40 yards, outpacing the Cartagena full back before squaring the ball back to Raul who turned the ball home from an acute angle. The goal sparked wild celebrations from both players and supporters alike.
CURRENT STATS
4th MAZARRÓN FC P 33 W 16 D 10 L 7 GF 50 GA 29 Points 58
9th CARTAGENA FC P 33 W 13 D 7 L 13 GF 53 GA 46 Points 46
WHO WATCH OUT FOR
Cartagena FC have three players who know where the net is. They are Andres Alonso Sanchez who has been missing from their lineup for a few weeks but has scored 7 and wears the number 6 shirt. Next is Ismael Quero Herrero who has the number 9 on his back and has also 7 goals to his name and finally Alvaro Cordero Martinez Corbalan but he hasn't been seen in the Cartagena team lineup since 8th December last year but is still recorded as having scored, yes you've guessed, 7 goals. The strange thing is none of these three top marksmen played in last weekends game.
SANCTIONS AND SUSPENSIONS
Details of any sanctions or suspensions will be listed on the forum when available, usually on a Thursday night.
