Next weekend home game details
MAZARRÓN F.C. v MINERVA S.F.C.
Sunday 20th March 2016
Kickoff 5pm (17.00)
Back at home again with only 9, yes 9, games left to the end of the regular season and this weekend we will be entertaining Minerva SFC. If you remember Minerva ran away with our league, primera autonomica, last season finishing top of the table and are also doing quite well this season.
This game pits 5th placed Mazarron FC against 6th placed Minerva SFC so that just one places and two points between the sides. Although Minerva did the 'double' over us last season we have already rectified that somewhat by beating them on their own pitch in early November last year and here is a brief résumé of what happened then.
SFC MINERVA 1 MAZARRON FC 2 (1.11.2015)
Mazarron were content to defend in the early stages of this game but Antonio had to be on his toes to keep out a couple of long range efforts. Although Juanma missed a chance for Mazarron in the 17th minute it was Minerva who were having the majority of possession without really troubling Antonio in the Mazarron goal, however, it was Mazarron who took the lead on 39 minutes when, from a free kick, Jose powered in a stunning header into the net and gave Mazarron a half time lead.
Mazarron had a good goal disallowed for offside when Enrique fired past the advancing Minerva keeper. Mazarron then had a couple of good penalty appeals turned down. At this stage Minerva were pressing forward at every opportunity in search of an equaliser but it was Mazarron who scored next.
Juanma found Jose in space in front of goal and he selflessly rolled the ball into the path of Santi who made no mistake with a crisp shot into the back of the net.
Thereafter it was all Minerva but a resolute defence dealt with everything that was thrown at them until the 83rd minute when a left wing corner was headed home by Moreno to reduce the arrears.
The final seven minutes plus an additional seven minutes of added time was like the Alamo but Mazarron FC hung on for an excellent victory.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEKEND?
Mazarron FC were on their longest trip of the season, up to Jumilla when they threw a one goal lead away not once but twice by unusual sloppy defensive errors.
Meanwhile Minerva SFC at home to CD Algar where the final score was 1-1 but the story of this game must be the three Minerva players plus their manager and one of his assistants sent off, three for double yellows for the players and two straight reds for the team officials ! But they still hung on for a point.
CURRENT STATS
MAZARRON FC P 25 W 12 D 6 L 7 GF 44 GA 35 Points 42
MINERVA SFC P 25 W 10 D 10 L 5 GF 39 GA 19 Points 40
WHO TO WATCH OUT FOR
Minerva have one main threat in the shape of Jorge Martinez Asensio with 13 goals and is the third highest scorer in the league, but after him you have to look a long way down the list to find another player who has contributed many goal unlike Mazarrn FC who has Jose near the top of the goal scoring stats and many other players such as Palote, Willi and Juan Andreo scoring freely, so the watch word is 'stop Jorge'
Expect a physical game against our Cartagena based visitors, two weeks ago they had 11 players booked in their 1-0 away defeat at Totana but, surprisingly, no one was sent off! How's that for managing you substitutions? But it a pity we didn't play them last weekend as three of their players were suspended against CD Algar as a result of those 11 bookings when they reached the 5 yellow card mark. And they racked up a number of yellow cards against CD Algar last Sunday, the suspensions, when posted will make interesting reading.
The clue to Minerva's success this season is their rock solid defence only conceding 19 goal in 25 games, that's some record.
