Match report by Dave Capper.
MAZARRON FC 1 JUMILLA CD 1
Mazarron were denied a victory they richly deserved when the referee controversially disallowed an 85th minute "goal" by substitute Palote.
Jumilla, unbeaten in the league this season, started the brighter of the two teams and, for the first fifteen minutes, Mazarron were mainly on the defensive with Juan Fran in the centre of the defence making a number of timely headed clearances.
Mazarron then took control of the game with Juanito, twice, and Jose putting in dangerous crosses which just eluded onrushing Mazarron players. Jumilla's first shot came after 27 minutes but went harmlessly wide of the Mazarron goal and the home team dominated the remaining exchanges in the first half without creating any clear cut chances.
Palote and Champi replaced Hafid and Santi at half time and the changes seemed to inspire Mazarron. Jose raced down the left and hit a shot just wide after 47 minutes but Mazaron did take the lead after 52 minutes. A through ball found Jose racing through the Jumilla defence before dribbling round the keeper and coolly slotting the ball past two defenders and into the net.
Jose had another shot saved by the Jumilla keeper following good work by Palote and Mazarron thought they had doubled their lead after 56 minutes. Palote's cheeky back heel saw Champi crossing to the far post where Juanitio drove the ball into the net only to be denied by the linesman's offside flag.
Mazarron were totally dominating the game now but a slip by Juan Andreo let in Jumilla and Antonio had to come to the rescue by saving with his feet. At the other end Juanito hit a fierce shot from the edge of the penalty area which was tipped round the post by the visiting keeper.
Totally against the run of play, Jumilla equalised after 72 minutes when a right wing corner was forced home by Gomez with the Mazarron defenders appealing in vain for handball.
Mazarron continued to press forward in search of a winner and they seemed to be rewarded after 85 minutes when Palote's shot was blocked at the first attempt by the Jumilla keeper but he managed to force the rebound over the line. The referee appeared to point to the centre spot and the linesman ran back to the middle as the Mazarron players and supporters celebrated wildly. The celebrations were short lived, however, as the game restarted with a free kick to Jumilla with players and spectators alike having no idea what had happened.
At the final whistle Mazarron players surrounded the referee and Juanlu was shown a red card before the referee was escorted to the dressing rooms running the gauntlet of very angry spectators. It had been a magnificent performance by a Mazarron team which has turned the corner in recent weeks and were denied a win which would have been fully deserved.
