I was sad this week to learn that former Nottingham Forest/QPR player Stan Bowles has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the age of 66.
Stan played for Forest in the 1979/80 season, when we won the European Cup for the second time.
We never saw the best of him really and he is best known for his time with QPR, where he's a massive hero still.
It was still clear to see what a great player he was in his short time with NFFC.
He was an absolute magician with the ball at his feet. He was a maverick – on and off the field – and they are sorely missing from our game today.
Stan is a real crafty Cockney. He loved a game of cards and a gamble and was great fun to be around.
It was a shame it didn't work out for him at Forest but these things happen, even to great players.

And, of course, after that he was at Brentford for a few years where he ended his league playing career.
He still turned up at Griffin Park and was always well received there.
A great comment from his Wiki entry.....
In 1979, Bowles fell out with QPR's new manager, Tommy Docherty. Bowles responded to Docherty's plea of "You can trust me, Stan" with "I'd rather trust my chickens with Colonel Sanders".
