NAUGHTY BARCELONA
Brazilian footballer Neymar is due to give evidence in a Spanish court over allegations of tax fraud surrounding his transfer to Barcelona in 2013.
The current and former president of the club denied wrongdoing at the court in Madrid on Monday. Barcelona said it paid Brazilian club Santos €57m (£43m) for Neymar, 23, with his parents receiving €45m of the fee.
But investigators allege the fee was closer to €83m and that Barcelona should have paid another €13m in tax. Barcelona Football Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor, Sandro Rosell, all deny defrauding the tax office

Poor old Neymar. Not the brightest spark in the fire I guess!
He's stuck in the middle of two court cases, neither of which are probably of his doing.
In Brazil, a sports agency is suing because the actual deal was larger than disclosed and they should have had a larger share of the pie. In Spain, the authorities want their full IVA on the 'black money' that obviously got paid.
In the end, he could be the final scapegoat with the decision being that the black money was, in effect, a signing-on fee (not part of the transfer) and he'll have to pay the tax due on 'income'. We may then see the authorities scrambling over if it's due in Brazil or Spain.
Isn't taxation a wonderous thing!

Trivia question of the day......when was the last time two Barcelona players scored hat-tricks in the same game at the Camp Nou before the Valencia game?
Part B...what is the strange coincidence between then and Wednesday's 7-0 goal fest?
ANSWER:
A bit of a trick question! The last time was at the previous Barcelona stadium Les Corts in 1956!
23 September 1956 — FC Barcelona 7–3 Atlético Madrid: In Week Three of league play in 1956/57, Barça got four goals from Luis Suárez and three from Justo Tejada.

COULD MANCHESTER UNITED REPLICATE BACELONAS PENALTY ANTICS?
Did you see Messi taking his penalty kick against Celta Vego yesterday? He side footed it to Suarez who rushed into the box and just rolled the ball into the goal after seeing which way the goal keeper had dived, classic.
But on the BBC football page they asked if Manchester United could do it and one wag replied that it would go something like this:-
Rooney would pass to Martial, who would pass to Carrick, back to Smalling and then to De Gea who would score an 'own goal'

WILL BARCELONA TAX PROBLEMS NEVER END?
A court in Brazil has frozen assets of football star Neymar.
The federal court in Sao Paulo announced it was issuing warrants to freeze almost $50m (£34.5m) worth of assets belonging to the Brazil and Barcelona striker.
They include a yacht, a jet and several properties.
Neymar, 23, is accused of tax evasion between 2011 and 2013 and faces legal proceedings. He has denied any wrongdoing.
How will this poor boy ever make ends meet?

BUT WILL THEY FILL IT? YOU BET THEY WILL
Barcelona have unveiled plans to remodel their Nou Camp stadium with the capacity rising to 105,000 by the 2021-22 season.
A joint bid by Japanese architecture company Nikken Sekkei and a Catalan studio won the tender to remodel the home of the La Liga champions.
The Nou Camp has a capacity of 99,354 and is the biggest stadium in Europe. The redevelopment will also see the roof ring the entire stadium with all the seats being under cover.
Work is scheduled to start in the 2017-18 season and will not prevent the club from hosting games.

"Argentina and Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud, Spanish media say. His father, Jorge Messi, was also given a jail term for defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.2m; $4.6m) between 2007 and 2009. During the trial, prosecutors said tax havens in Belize and Uruguay were used to conceal earnings from image rights. But Lionel Messi said he "knew nothing" about his financial affairs." (BBC Sport)

Barcelona and Brazil footballer Neymar should face trial for fraud, a Spanish judge has said, months after the case was dismissed.
The case was reopened on Monday, brought by investment fund DIS, which claims it was short-changed during Neymar's 2013 move to Barcelona.

IS MESSI GOING TO DO PORRIDGE?
A 21-month jail term handed down last year to Barcelona and Argentina footballer Lionel Messi has been confirmed by Spain's Supreme Court, but he is unlikely to go to prison.
Messi and his father Jorge, who manages his finances, were both convicted in 2016 of defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.5m; $4.6m) in taxes.
Jorge Messi's jail term was reduced because he paid some of the taxes.
In Spain, prison terms of under two years can be served under probation.
The case will now return to the court in Barcelona that handed down the original judgement

WHAT A PITY IF HE AVOIDS PRISON, CAN YOU IMAGINE THE PRISON TEAM WITH BOTH MESSI AND RONALDO IN THE SAME SQUAD?
Football star Lionel Messi could avoid a 21-month prison sentence for tax fraud by paying a fine, Spanish media are reporting.
Spain's state prosecutor would swap jail time for a fine of €255,000 ($285,000; £224,000), which equates to €400 for each day behind bars.
The final decision on the fine rests in the hands of the Spanish courts.
