UD Horadada 0 CF Mazarron 0, 05.03.06
This was a match totally dominated by a strong wind, and the 34 traveling supports from the newly named “Los Amigos de Mazarron” found it hard to keep warm.
Mazarron had the wind behind them in the first half, but this proved to be far from an advantage, as many of their balls forward, either from open play or from free kicks, were over hit and ended up harmlessly behind the Horadada goal. Navarro was called upon to make two good saves in the first three minutes of the game as the home side kept the ball on the ground and attacked down the left hand side, where Pesca proved to be quite a handful throughout the game. The first threat from Mazarron came after 6 mins, when Delgado went down easily (for the first of many times) but the resulting free kick from Candela was hit wide.
Horadada were having by far the best of the early exchanges, and Navarro was called upon again when a poor clearance fell straight to an opposing striker, and then he saved well from a headed chance. Mazarron then applied some pressure of their own as firstly a free kick from Candela was headed on by Delgado, but unfortunately straight to the keeper. A minute later, Paco Valera came close with a shot following a corner on the right.
As the first half moved on, Mazarron came more into the game. A move between strikers Paco Valera and Delgado very nearly presented Gavirio with a chance, and Delgado had a wonderful chance himself following a low cross from his strike partner, but he was unable to gain control of the ball from just a couple of metres out. After 36 mins, a free kick from Bersabe was blocked and the ball fell to Torres, who lashed a wonderful shot from fully 35 metres that was well saved in the top left hand of the goal. At the very end of the first half, Mazarron had a narrow escape. An attempted clearance hit an attacker, the ball was struck towards goal and the keeper was unable to hold the shot, but managed to thump the ball away at the second attempt.
In the second half, Mazarron never really got to grips with playing into the wind, and Horadada over hit many balls as they struggled with the wind behind them. After 10 mins, Bersabe and Gavirio were replaced by Alex and Angel, but the ball was being played in the air much too much and the forwards were unable to gain any descent possession. Horadada had two really good chances during the third quarter. Firstly, a free kick was blocked by the wall and the follow up was hit just over the top, and the second was a glancing header that well saved by Navarro. Mazarron’s two best chances of this half both came to nothing. A Candela free kick was touched to Olave whose fierce shot was high and wide, and as another attacked went across the edge of the penalty area, it eventually fell to Alex, whose tremendous strike fizzed over to corner of the far post and the bar. With 10 mins left, Dani replaced Villanueva, but the game closed quietly as both teams seemed to accept that the wind was going to be the only winner.
Mazarron: Navarro, Torres, Javi Manzano, Olave, Manu, Bersabe, Villanueva, Candela, Paco Valera, Juan Delgado, Gavirio.
