ELCHE ARE RELEGATED
Spanish football writer Andy West: "Sad news - Elche relegated from La Liga due to financial irregularities. Should mean a welcome reprieve for Eibar, but that's no way to stay up. Got to feel for Elche's fans, staff and especially players - worked hard all year to stay up and now relegated through no fault of their own.
"Eibar manager Gaizka Garitano resigned at the end of the season after failing to keep them up. Does that mean he'll now un-resign?!"

"Eibar manager Gaizka Garitano resigned at the end of the season after failing to keep them up. Does that mean he'll now un-resign?!" The good news is they've only been demoted one level to the Segunda A. The bad news is they also have a fine of 180k€. So, on top of not being able to afford the overdue tax, they won't now be able to afford the fine! And, if this puts too much pressure on their limited finances such that the can't pay the players wages through July, THEN they could be further demoted to Segunda B!

Oh dear. We could be in for a repeat of the Orihuela shambles of a couple of years ago!
Elche are set to appeal to the Court of Justice as to the unfairness of the demotion.
We haven't heard the last of this!
(Not to mention the chaos of trying to organise the leagues for next season!)

I really don't understand the Spanish sanctions system!
Elche get demoted due to not paying their bills while Sporting Gijon, promoted from Segunda to the Primera, merely have a transfer ban imposed! They have players' wages due from before last December.

Elche have now cleared the tax debt and will go to court to get their relegation rescinded. But it may be too little, too late.
(Bit like the Greek situation really!)

The civil court has confirmed Elche's demotion to the Segunda because they paid the taxman too late. Now they just have to pay the players' debts before the end of next week or they'll be further demoted to Segunda B! What a mess.
